Manchester United are allegedly increasingly their efforts to secure a January deal for Lecce defender Patrick Dorgu.

Manchester United are reportedly ready to open discussions with Lecce regarding a potential deal for Patrick Dorgu.

The Red Devils' disappointing campaign continued on Sunday afternoon as they were defeated 3-1 by Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford.

After the game, head coach Ruben Amorim suggested that the current team is 'the worst in United's history', an eye-catching statement from a manager who has been in charge for 15 matches.

United are known to be in a position where they cannot afford to spend big on new players without bolstering their position with the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability regulations.

Nevertheless, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who was commenting on X, it appears that the leg work is being put into negotiating a deal for a new wing-back.

January transfer possible?

The report suggests that United officials are eager to begin formal talks with their Lecce counterparts over the acquisition of the Denmark international.

Although it is stated that no bid has been made for the 20-year-old, it appears that United have settled on the youngster being their top target for the left flank.

Luke Shaw has barely played for a year due to various injury issues while Tyrrell Malacia is allegedly available to leave on a permanent or temporary basis.

Right-sided Diogo Dalot has largely struggled when asked to deputise on the opposite flank and his performance against Brighton may have proven to be the last straw for Amorim.

Dorgu a much-needed arrival?

Dorgu may be plying his trade for one of the smallest teams currently competing in Serie A but it has not stopped him showcasing his qualities.

He has held down a position in the starting lineup since his introduction to Italian top-flight football in 2023-24, now having contributed five goals and two assists from his 56 appearances in all competitions.

Also having four caps to his name for Denmark, Lecce are demanding in the region of €40m (£33.87m) to cash in on Dorgu, who holds a contract until 2029.

The report adds that Dorgu is ready to make the switch to Old Trafford, aware that there is an opportunity to become first choice in a crucial position of Amorim's 3-4-3 system.
