Manchester United youngsters Chris Smalling and Nick Powell undergo surgery to ensure their fitness in time for pre-season.

Manchester United's retiring manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that two of the club's youngsters have gone under the surgeon's knife to correct their respective injuries.

The duo have been out of action for a number of weeks, but Ferguson has confirmed that the operations have taken place now to ensure that they are both ready for pre-season training.

"They are not long-term injuries. They will be ready for pre-season and that's the important thing. It's why we do these things," the Scot told MUTV. "Chris had problems with his foot and had an operation on it. It'll be resolved and he'll be back for pre-season in July.

"Young Nick had a small operation to relieve a problem he had and he'll also be available for pre-season training. I knew I was not going to use them for the last part of the season, having won the league, so I think it was important to get the operations done."

Ferguson will take charge of United for the final time tomorrow afternoon away at West Bromwich Albion.
