Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho says that he 'expects more goals' from Wayne Rooney this season.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has called on Wayne Rooney and the rest of the team's forwards to help ease the goalscoring burden currently on Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Red Devils have only scored 19 times in their 14 Premier League matches this season, which is 16 short of Liverpool, who have the best goals for record at this stage of the campaign.

Ibrahimovic has eight league goals to his name, but Rooney has only struck once in England's top flight this term, while Marcus Rashford, Juan Mata and Anthony Martial have seven league goals between them.

Rooney is currently one goal short of Sir Bobby Charlton's goalscoring record for Man United and Mourinho wants more from his captain in terms of numbers.

"With me, he is an attacking player. In the national team, they can do with him what they want to do. In the national team he is their player, he is not my player, and they can do what they want. If they want to play him right-back, they can play him right-back. It's not my problem," Mourinho told reporters.

"In my team, he is an attacking player - he will play as a nine or a 10, or eventually coming from one of the sides. So as an attacking player, normally he scores more goals. He scored a couple, I think at Fenerbahce and one in the Premier League.

"We expect more goals from him, yes, but we expect more goals from everyone in the team. Maybe Zlatan is the one [exception] but as the main striker it is normal that he has more goals scored. But all the other attacking players, we expect more goals from them."

After booking their spot in the last-32 stage of the Europa League on Thursday night, Man United will return to league action at home to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon.
