France coach Didier Deschamps surprised by Anthony Martial form

France coach Didier Deschamps concedes that he did not expect Anthony Martial to enjoy such a goal-laden start to his Manchester United career.

France coach Didier Deschamps has admitted that even he has been left surprised by the speed with which Anthony Martial has adapted to life at Manchester United.

The French striker, 19, has netted four times in six games for the Red Devils following a £36m move from AS Monaco on deadline day.

Given the transfer fee - which made Martial the most expensive teenager in history - it was suggested that the youngster could struggle to justify the hype, and Deschamps is delighted with his red-hot form.

He told reporters: "He has the potential. Everybody is surprised by what he is doing at United but that's good for him and good for us. He deserves to be here.

"It was anything but easy after everything that has been written and said about him. It has silenced a few people. He's young, he may have more complicated times. He's able to make great things happen. He did in Monaco.

"He's doing it now in a club at another level so it is easier to pay attention to his performances. He's always been talented though."

Three of his four goals have come in the Champions League, with the other coming in the Capital One Cup.
