Real Madrid ease past Manchester City in Melbourne

Real Madrid hammer Manchester City 4-1 in the International Champions Cup in Melbourne.

Real Madrid have clinched the International Champions Cup with a comfortable 4-1 win over Manchester City in Melbourne.

Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo, Pepe and Denis Cheryshev were all among the goals for Madrid, who were rarely troubled by the former Premier League champions.

The match got off to a disappointing start for City when debutant Fabian Delph was forced off with just 18 minutes played due to a hamstring strain.

Madrid took the lead three minutes later as Benzema pounced in the box to volley Gareth Bale's cross past Joe Hart.

Rafael Benitez's side doubled their advantage soon after through Ronaldo, who poked home after getting on the end of a long ball.

The Spaniards continued to create chances after that as City struggled to cope. Isco was denied by a last-ditch challenge from Bacary Sagna before Bale almost made it 3-0 when he headed over.

City fought back during the final stages of the half, but they were unable to turn their possession into any clear-cut opportunities. The best that they could muster was a tame effort from Samir Nasri that was easily held by Keylor Navas.

With the clock ticking down towards the break, Madrid found the net for a third time when Pepe rose highest to head in powerfully from Isco's corner.

However, Manuel Pellegrini's side had the final say of the half as Yaya Toure converted from the penalty spot after Sergio Ramos was harshly judged to have handled the ball inside the box.

Despite being given a boost just before the interval, City failed to shift the momentum in their favour in the second half. Madrid continued to dominate play, with Ronaldo coming close twice when he headed over after firing wide a few minutes earlier.

Los Blancos almost added a fourth goal to their tally on the hour, but Raphael Varane headed inches wide. Varane's miss mattered little though, as substitute Denis Cheryshev converted at the back post to wrap up the victory on 73 minutes following good work from the lively Isco.
