Alex Mowatt earns Leeds United draw

Alex Mowatt scores in the second half to earn a 1-1 draw for Leeds United against Birmingham City in the Championship.

Leeds United came from behind in the second half at St Andrew's to share a 1-1 draw with Birmingham City in the Championship this lunchtime.

Marco Silvestri had to make an early save when Brek Shea tried to blast the ball in from 25 yards out, but his finish was straight at the Leeds keeper.

Giuseppe Bellusci came close to heading the ball into his own net as Birmingham continued to press, but the defender just headed the ball wide of the post.

After a quiet spell, the hosts managed to break the deadlock shortly before half time as Shea sent in a low cross for Wes Thomas, who curled the ball into the top corner.

Thomas's strike broke the net, resulting in around an eight-minute delay late in the first half while repairs were undertaken.

The visitors tried to use the extended stoppage time to get back on level terms, but were unable to put their opponents under pressure.

Shea came close to doubling Birmingham's lead early in the second half as he attempted to flick the ball past Silvestri from a David Cotterill cross, but his effort was just wide.

Clayton Donaldson also had a chance for the hosts as he tried to squeeze the ball in from out wide, only to brush the side-netting.

Leeds's first on-target effort of the match came just before the hour mark as Alex Mowatt tried to curl the ball in from just outside the box, but Darren Randolph was left with a comfortable save.

Demarai Gray came off the bench with just over 20 minutes to play and came close to doubling the hosts lead with an effort from just outside the box, but Silvestri made the stop.

Despite Birmingham's dominance, Leeds managed to equalise inside the final 15 minutes when a clearance fell to Mowatt, who avoided a couple of challenges before sending a low shot into the corner.

Gray tried to add a late winner for Birmingham, making a blistering run into the penalty area only to be denied by a Silvestri save, while Thomas came close to scoring his second in injury time but headed wide.

The result leaves Birmingham 11th in the table, while Leeds sit 19th.
