Chesterfield and Portsmouth play out goalless draw

Chesterfield and Portsmouth play out a goalless draw in their League Two encounter at the Proact Stadium.

Leaders Chesterfield have been held to goalless draw by Portsmouth in their League Two clash at the Proact Stadium this evening.

The visitors almost broke the deadlock early on when Ricky Holmes flicked a cross towards goal that Tommy Lee was forced to save.

Lee could do nothing about a shot just two minutes later, however, as Jake Jervis beat the keeper with his effort only to see it come back off the post.

Chesterfield first tested the Portsmouth keeper just before the half-hour mark as Jimmy Ryan's low drive from 25 yards was gathered by Trevor Carson at the second time of asking.

The hosts came close again shortly before the break when Danny Gardner flashed a low and powerful free kick narrowly past the post.

Gary Roberts almost gave his side a perfect start to the second half when he broke into the Portsmouth area, but his strike across the face of goal went just wide.

Jervis threatened again for the visitors on the hour mark when he came forward down the right wing, but his eventual shot was dragged wide of the target.

Portsmouth almost found the opening goal in the 66th minute as Wes Fogden brought a chipped through-ball down nicely only to be denied by a fine save.

The visitors continued to put the pressure on in the final 20 minutes with Jed Wallace shooting from inside the area, but he sent his effort just wide.

Neither side could find a winner, however, as the spoils were shared and Chesterfield extended their lead at the top to two points.
