Serena Williams sets up a potential last-eight meeting against Maria Sharapova with a hard-fought victory over Caroline Wozniacki.

Serena Williams has continued her fine record against Caroline Wozniacki by beating the Dane 1-6 6-3 6-2 in the third round of the Madrid Open.

World number six Wozniacki took the first set with ease, storming into a 4-0 lead by breaking the American's serve on two occasions.

Williams finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth game with the help of two huge aces, but Wozniacki replied by winning the next two games to claim the first set.

The 13-time Grand Slam champion recorded her first break of serve to take a 3-2 lead in the second and went on to break again on her way to levelling the match at a set apiece.

Another early break in the final set put Williams in command and despite a stubborn Wozniacki response, the American secured victory to set up a potential quarter-final meeting with Maria Sharapova.
