Grigor Dimitrov has fought his way into the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open with a 7-6(5) 3-6 6-3 victory over Stanislas Wawrinka in the third round.
Both players lost serve in the first set, meaning that a tie-break was eventually needed to separate the two competitors.
Dimitrov managed to edge the decider 7-5, but he was immediately placed on the backfoot in the second set as Wawrinka went a break up.
Wawrinka's Bulgarian opponent failed to create one break-point opportunity in the second set as the Swiss pro drew level on the clay surface.
The third and final set was a tight affair as games went by way of serve until Dimitrov struck in the eighth game after Wawrinka initially saved three break points.
Dimitrov was able to successfully serve for the match.
