Roger Federer through to face Andy Murray in Cincinnati

Roger Federer is through to the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati Open after defeating Gael Monfils in three sets.

Roger Federer has recorded a three-set victory over Gael Monfils to reach the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati Open.

The world number three, who reached the final of the Rogers Cup last week, overcame a second-set fightback from the Frenchman to eventually win 6-4 4-6 6-3.

Federer and Monfils shared four breaks of serve during the opening eight games before the Swiss struck at the end of the set to move closer to the last eight.

However, the 33-year-old failed to capitalise on his advantage as Monfils struck back in the second to take the match into a decider.

The third was evenly contested but after saving three break points, Federer prevailed to set up a quarter-final showdown with Andy Murray.
