The world number one took the first set 6-2 in Toronto, but the second proved to be tightly contested, with Monfils eventually prevailing courtesy of a 7-4 victory in the tie-break after Djokovic lost two serves.

Monfils edged ahead in the decider, only for his Serbian opponent to peg him back at 6-6 to take the match to another tie-break.

Djokovic made the most of Monfils's four losses of serve to come out on top, setting up a meeting with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the next round.
