Bernard Tomic takes less than two hours to thrash Leonardo Mayer on day two of the Australian Open and keep home interest in the men's singles alive.

Local favourite Bernard Tomic has wasted no time qualifying for round two of the Australian Open with a quick-fire win over Leonardo Mayer.

Tomic took just over 90 minutes to record a straight-sets win over Mayer earlier today with a mix of strong serving and fine passing shots.

Mayer lost a break early in the first set and swam against the tide throughout as Tomic was cheered on by a passionate home crowd.

The 20-year-old dropped just eight games in total on the way to a 6-3 6-2 6-3 victory, setting up a second-round clash with either Dudi Sela or Nikolay Davydenko later this week.
