Former New Zealand chief Wayne Smith has emerged as the frontrunner to coach England's backs following Andy Farrell's decision to remain at Saracens.
According to The Sun, the door is open for ex-Northampton coach Smith to make a return to Test rugby in England.
Farrell helped guide the national team to second place in the Six Nations, alongside then interim coach Stuart Lancaster and Graham Rowntree, but believes he has unfinished business with the Aviva Premiership champions.
The report notes that the Kiwi would not be available to take up the post until August, meaning that Lancaster may have to appoint a temporary backs coach for this summer's tour of South Africa should he favour Smith.
Smith won 17 caps for the All Blacks during his playing career, and made the step up to head coach in 2000.
