Jarrod Lyle leads the Australian Open

Jarrod Lyle leads the Australian Open after an opening round 65 puts him one shot clear at The Lakes Golf Club.

Australia's Jarrod Lyle heads the Australian Open leaderboard after the opening day at The Lakes Golf Club in Sydney.

Lyle, who is 477th in the official world rankings, produced an opening round 65 to take an early lead in Australia.

The 30-year-old was seven under par after the first day, one shot ahead of his more illustrious rivals Dustin Johnson and Nick Watney.

"I am happy, seven under is a damn good score and I'm looking forward to tomorrow," said Lyle.

Lyle, who has a best major finish of 48th at the 2008 US Open, hit five birdies and an eagle on the par five, 14th, to set the early pace on Thursday.

Former world number one Tiger Woods was tied for eighth place after he finished the day four under par.

Meanwhile, the tournament was overshadowed by controversy when John Daly walked off the course at the eleventh hole.
