Steve Williams has apologised for his comments about Tiger Woods that he admits could be "construed as racist".

The former caddie of Woods caused outrage when he made a speech at the Annual Caddie Awards dinner on Friday.

Williams used racist terminology in reference to Woods after receiving the "best celebration of the year" award.

The New Zealander has since apologised via his website.

"I apologise for comments I made last night at the Annual Caddy Awards dinner in Shanghai," Williams wrote on kiwicaddy.co.nz.

"Players and caddies look forward to this evening all year and the spirit is always joking and fun.

"I now realise how my comments could be construed as racist. However I assure you that was not my intent. I sincerely apologise to Tiger and anyone else I have offended."

Woods partnership with Williams ended in an acrimonious split in July, with Williams going on to caddy Adam Scott.

The move immediately paid dividends for Williams as Scott won the WGC Invitational in August, although Williams took plenty of credit for the win after the tournament.
