Paul Scharner denies his former club Wigan a vital win as the Latics draw 1-1 with West Brom at the DW Stadium.

Wigan Athletic remain in the relegation zone after surrendering a lead to draw 1-1 with West Bromwich Albion at the DW Stadium this afternoon.

Roberto Martinez's side knew prior to kick-off that a win would see them climb out of the Premier League's bottom three.

That appeared to act as motivation for the Latics, who began the game brightly. Franco Di Santo, who started in place of the injured Hugo Rodellega, had a hat-trick of chances, the last of which forced Ben Foster to push wide.

From the resultant corner, captain Gary Caldwell had another early opportunity for Wigan but fired his shot past the post.

Foster was called into action again when he tipped James McCarthy's shot onto the bar in a first half where the hosts were dominant.

Finally the Latics grabbed a deserved advantage when James McArthur scored from close range eight minutes into the second period.

However, their lead was to last only ten minutes as former Wigan favourite Paul Scharner headed in an equaliser from Chris Brunt's inswinging cross.

Midfielder Mohammed Diame had a great chance to win the game for the hosts but shot wide from Jean Beausejour's cutback.
