Dean Hammond scores late header to save point for Leicester City

Dean Hammond scores a late header to earn Leicester City a 2-2 draw against Wigan Athletic.

Wigan Athletic have been denied a victory by Dean Hammond, who scored a late header to earn Leicester City a 2-2 draw at the DW Stadium.

Nick Powell proved to be a busy player in the early stages of the match, clearing a Liam Moore header off the line shortly before hitting the crossbar at the other end of the pitch with a header of his own.

The on-loan youngster was involved once again to create a chance for Jack Collison, who was denied by Kasper Schmeichel midway through the first half.

Wigan were rewarded for their positive play in the 37th minute when Ivan Ramis found space inside the box to head home the opening goal from a Jordi Gomez free kick.

Uwe Rosler's side were ahead for only five minutes as the leaders hit back before the break thanks to a powerful strike by Andy King from the corner of the box which left Ali Al-Habsi helpless.

The match continued to be played in open fashion by both sides, with James McArthur forcing Schmeichel to tip a shot over the crossbar on the hour mark.

Just moments after McArthur's strike was saved, Wigan were back ahead as Rob Kiernan added a vital touch at the near post to put his side into the lead once again.

Wigan were inches away from scoring their third of the night following a quick counter-attack, but Moore responded well to clear James McClean's effort off the line.

Leicester had a great chance to level the scores in the 73rd minute, but Riyad Mahrez was unable to keep his composure as a wild strike flew off target just moments after Kevin Phillips had seen a shot blocked.

However, the leaders refused to accept defeat as Hammond headed in an equaliser with just three minutes of normal time remaining to keep their unbeaten run going.
