Half-Time Report: Will Grigg, Donvervon Daniels fire Wigan Athletic ahead

Goals from Will Grigg and Donervon Daniels help Wigan into a 2-0 half-time lead at home to Scunthorpe United.

Wigan Athletic have moved 45 minutes away from their first League One win this season after cruising into a 2-0 half-time lead over Scunthorpe United at the DW Stadium.

Mark Robins's pre-match plan was thrown into disarray after just three minutes as the visitors conceded a penalty when Will Grigg was brought down in the area.

Grigg - a summer signing from Brentford - stepped up to convert with aplomb as he opened his account for the Latics, who in turn scored their first of the season.

Gary Caldwell's side continued to push forward as they looked determined to build on their fast and furious start and record a first League One win.

A second nearly came on the 19-minute mark when midfielder Michael Jacobs galloped toward goal, but his 25-yard strike sailed narrowly over the bar.

On 26 minutes, Craig Davies - one of two changes made to the first XI - came agonisingly close to vindicating Caldwell's decision but his effort drifted wide.

However, it proved a sign of things to come as Donervon Daniels - the other change made by Caldwell - slammed the ball home from close range a minute later for his first Wigan goal.

Jacobs struck the bar in the closing seconds of the first period, but it did little to take the gloss off an encouraging opening 45 minutes for the hosts.
