Melbourne Victory go third with win over Sydney FC

Besart Berisha scores twice to help Melbourne Victory to a 4-2 triumph away at A-League leaders Sydney FC.

Melbourne Victory have moved into third place in the A-League table with a 4-2 victory away at Sydney FC.

Sydney, the league leaders, went ahead as early as the fifth minute after Alex Gersbach worked his way into the penalty area before cutting the ball back for Filip Holosko to tap into the net.

However, four minutes later, Victory were back on level terms as Besart Berisha found the net with a deflected effort from 20 yards.

In an end-to-end opening quarter, Sydney regained the lead through Alex Brosque, who converted the rebound after Shane Smeltz had seen a shot saved by the goalkeeper.

Less than half an hour had been played when Melbourne equalised for the second time in the match, with Guilherme Finkler finding a way past Vedran Janjetovic in the Sydney goal.

On the hour mark, the home side almost regained the lead through Smeltz, who struck the crossbar with an header, but on 68 minutes, and against the run of play, Victory went in front through Kosta Barbarouses's volley.

Sydney pushed for a late leveller, with Milos Dimitrijevic and Matt Simon both going close, but Melbourne confirmed the win with a late goal from Berisha, who registered his second with a low shot into the corner.
