Sydney FC, Newcastle Jets play out stalemate

Sydney FC play out a goalless draw with Newcastle Jets, with Sydney continuing the streak of not scoring a goal since mid-December.

Sydney FC continued their run of not scoring a goal in a match, as they played out a scoreless draw with Newcastle Jets at the WIN Stadium.

Sydney have not scored a goal in over 360 minutes, with their last coming in their 3-3 draw with Melbourne Victory on December 13.

The hosts dominated the game from early on but their attacking options failed to convert any of their 20 chances throughout the match.

Marc Janko was Sydney's main attacking threat but Newcastle did well to keep him goalless in the first 45 minutes.

The visitors started the second half well and began to hog the possession but didn't really make anything of it.

A late penalty claim for Sydney was turned down in the last few minutes of the game, as Bernie Ibini burst through the Jets' defence into the box and was brought down, with referee Lucien Laverdure waving away any claims.

The result is Newcastle's first clean sheet of the season but sees them stay in ninth, four points above Western Sydney Wanderers who remain at the bottom of the table.

Sydney stay in fifth but are losing ground on the top four as gap widens to four points.
