Sunderland's Billy Jones relieved to avoid final day drama

Sunderland defender Billy Jones admits that he is delighted his side managed to avoid the drama of a relegation battle on the final day of the Premier League season.

Sunderland defender Billy Jones has admitted that he is relieved to be avoiding the drama at the foot of the table on the final day of the season.

The Black Cats secured their survival with a goalless draw against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium to ensure their stay in the Premier League for a ninth consecutive season.

Jones has revealed that his side can now enjoy their trip to Chelsea on the final day while rivals Newcastle United and Hull City battle to stay in the division.

He told the club's official website: "At times towards the back end of the season there were moments of doubt where we wondered if we could pull it off, but over time we grew in confidence after turning in the performances we did and getting the results we needed.

"We were desperate to get the job done on Wednesday night and we're all just absolutely made up that we've achieved it.

"I think everyone out there was hoping for a soap opera ending with one final, dramatic twist to come on Sunday, but we're ecstatic that we're not part of that anymore and that we can go to Chelsea and enjoy playing the champions on their home turf."

Sunderland have offered Dick Advocaat the position as the club's manager on a long-term basis after guiding them to safety.
