Younes Kaboul came close to opening to scoring after 10 minutes as he tried to head in from a Christian Eriksen corner, just missing the target.
Eriksen set up another chance two minutes later, passing to Paulinho who attempted to convert it with a powerful drive from 25 yards out.
The home side were able to break the deadlock in the 16th minute when Sigurdsson also tried his luck from distance, finding the top corner with a well-placed 25-yard effort.
Hull tested the hands of Brad Friedel 10 minutes before half time, with Ahmed Elmohamady taking a strike from range, before Danny Graham saw his rebound stopped by Kaboul.
