Southampton are held to a goalless draw by Swansea City in the opening match of the 2017-18 campaign.

Swansea City have held Southampton to a goalless draw at St Mary's in their opening Premier League match of the 2017-18 season.

New Saints manager Mauricio Pellegrino watched his side waste numerous chances in his first competitive game in charge, during which they had 29 attempts on goal.

Only two of Southampton's efforts were on target, but Italian striker Manolo Gabbiadini did manage to rattle the post with a header after just 90 seconds.

Swansea spent much of the game on the back foot, their best chance to nick a goal against the run of play coming in the 10th minute when Tammy Abraham's glancing header dropped inches wide.

More relentless Saints pressure ensued in the second period, but Paul Clement's side almost snatched something moments after the interval when Leroy Fer blasted a volley just off target.

Southampton, who have not won a home opener in the top flight since the 1988-89 season, will take on West Ham United at St Mary's in their next fixture, while the Swans host Manchester United.
