Ronald Koeman surprised by excellent start

Southampton boss Ronald Koeman reveals that he has been taken aback by his side's excellent start to the Premier League season as they lie third in the table.

Southampton boss Ronald Koeman has admitted that even he has been surprised by how well his side have started the Premier League season.

The Saints are currently third in the table following their 8-0 hammering of Sunderland on Saturday, and the Dutchman has revealed that after a turbulent summer at the club, he wasn't overly confident of a flying start to the campaign.

He told Sky Sports News: "I was confident in the club, because after talking to the board I knew of course that Southampton had a good academy, good young players and I knew that some key players left the club, but we had opportunities to sign new players.

"But of course, the expectation was not so high in the beginning. The expectation now is much more. I didn't expect this good start of the season of course. I have to be realistic."

Koeman's side face Stoke City in their next game on Saturday at St Mary's Stadium.
