Christophe Galtier: 'Saint-Etienne's Lyon loss was cruel'

Saint-Etienne boss Christophe Galtier says that losing to Lyon in the final seconds of the derby du Rhone is "hard to swallow".

Christophe Galtier has said that Saint-Etienne's last-minute defeat to French rivals Lyon on Sunday night was "tough to swallow".

Les Verts are now without a home win in 14 clashes in the derby du Rhone after Jimmy Briand headed the winner in stoppage time to give Les Gones a 2-1 win at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard.

"Football is a cruel mistress for us at the moment, especially at home and in injury time," Galtier told reporters. "It's tough to swallow. We were average, even poor in the first half, but a lot better in the second even though Lyon opened the scoring with one of their first attacks.

"We reacted well and we hoped to score a second, but fortune didn't favour us. Conceding a goal in injury time - in a derby, no less - is hard to take. We expended a lot of energy to get the equaliser and then to look for a winner, and I think we paid the price at the end. The quality of one player - Yoann Gourcuff - and the presence of Jimmy Briand weighed heavily.

"We have the worst defensive record at home and that's no accident. We need to work hard to find a solution. Luckily there's a two-week break now; we'll take stock. We need to find solutions because we can't have a good season the way we're going."

Briand's winning goal came after Romain Hamouma had cancelled out Alexandre Lacazette's opener.
