Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema's record vs. Atletico Madrid

Ahead of Saturday's derby between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid, Sports Mole looks at Karim Benzema's past record against Los Blancos' local rivals.

Real Madrid could leapfrog local rivals Atletico Madrid into second place in the La Liga table this weekend when they visit the Wanda Metropolitano.

Just three days after playing out a 1-1 draw with Barcelona at Camp Nou - one of three Clasicos in the space of a month - the European champions are once again gearing themselves up for a huge derby.

Having been slow to accustom themselves to life without Cristiano Ronaldo, Real are beginning to show their best form again now, and that is largely down to Karim Benzema.

The Frenchman has scored six goals in his last five games across all competitions, and here Sports Mole looks at how he has fared against Atletico in the past.

In 31 previous editions of the Madrid derby, Benzema has managed just four goals - a thoroughly underwhelming record even accounting for Atletico's miserly defence.

The most recent of those goals did come in the European Super Cup at the start of this season, though, with Benzema levelling things up for his side before they fell to a 4-2 defeat after extra time.

It was the Frenchman's first goal against Atletico since October 2015, when his opener ultimately earned a point at the Vicente Calderon in La Liga.

Three of Benzema's four goals - and three of his four assists - in this fixture have come in 18 league showdowns and Real have won eight of those, although just one of those victories has come in the last 11 meetings.
