Schalke 04 captain Benedikt Howedes: 'We deserved more from Real Madrid tie'

Schalke 04 captain Benedikt Howedes says that his side deserved to progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Schalke 04 captain Benedikt Howedes has insisted that his side deserved more from their Champions League last-16 tie against Real Madrid after edging the second leg.

The Bundesliga side won 4-3 in a thrilling encounter at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, but were eliminated from the competition 5-4 on aggregate.

"We played a great game. We were very brave and were not overawed by a world-class team like Real Madrid. Congratulations to my team, we deserved more today," BBC Sport quotes Howedes as saying.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's second goal of the evening saw Schalke secure victory on the night, but it was not enough to overturn the 2-0 deficit from the first leg.
