Michel Platini: 'Allegations may damage my image'

Michel Platini hopes that "misunderstandings" over a payment made between himself and Sepp Blatter can be "resolved as soon as possible".

UEFA chief Michel Platini has claimed that recent allegations of wrongdoing may harm his reputation, as the current FIFA scandal continues to unravel.

The Frenchman, who is in the running to replace Sepp Blatter as FIFA president, was implicated in the latest developments concerning "disloyal payments".

It was suggested that Platini had received a fixed cash sum from Blatter in 2011, but the 60-year-old has insisted that the income was fully declared to Swiss authorities at the time.

In a letter sent to the 54 UEFA associations, he said: "I'm aware these events may harm my image and reputation... and I wish to use all energies to ensure that any issues or misunderstandings can be resolved as soon as possible."

Platini also vowed to clarify the payment with each member association, though he made no mention of his intention to usurp Blatter as world football's top boss.
