More FIFA officials arrested in Zurich over corruption scandal

More FIFA officials are arrested in Zurich in relation to the ongoing investigation into corruption.

More FIFA officials have been arrested by Swiss and United States authorities in Zurich in connection to the ongoing investigation into alleged corruption.

Arrests were made in the early hours of the morning at the Baur au Lac hotel, where numerous officials were detained by police in May.

According to the New York Times, once the raid began, a hotel manager told guests in the lobby that they had to leave the premises due to an "extreme situation".

It has been reported that CONCACAF president Alfredo Hawit and CONMEBOL president Juan Angel Napout were among those arrested in relation to allegations of money laundering, fraud and racketeering.

A statement from the Swiss authorities confirmed that two FIFA officials had been arrested on suspicion of "accepting bribes of millions of dollars".

It added that the officials are accused of receiving money in return for selling marketing rights for World Cup qualifying games, as well as football tournaments in Latin America.
