Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren not expecting signings before season opener

Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren reveals that the club are not likely to add to their squad before the start of the Premier League season.

Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren has revealed that he is expecting no further arrivals at the club before the start of the season.

The Magpies have signed Georginio Wijnaldum, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Chancel Mbemba to bolster their squad this summer for a combined £36m.

However, the former England manager has disclosed that his side are looking to add further players, but not in time for the season opener next week.

When asked if the club would start the season with their current squad, McClaren told reporters: "Yeah I would expect what we've got to start."

He added: "Are we looking at more? There is a lot of speculation out there. Nothing is happening at the present moment, believe you and me.

"There is a lot of work behind the scenes. It's taken us quite a while to get the ones we've got. We are pleased with them - very pleased - because of their quality. Will there be any more? I don't know, I always want more but are they available and can we get them? We don't know."

Newcastle face Southampton in their Premier League opener at St James' Park on August 9.
