Thorgan Hazard scored the winner as Borussia Monchengladbach claimed a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United in a friendly at St James' Park this afternoon.

Gabriel Obertan threatened early on for the Magpies, but after cutting inside from the left, he could only fire wide of the target.

The hosts created another opening soon after when Mike Williamson was picked out from a corner, before placing his header inches over the bar.

Midway through the first half Raffael worked some room just outside the box and lashed in a powerful drive that flashed narrowly wide of the post.

As the game edged towards half time Georginio Wijnaldum and Massadio Haidara both saw efforts saved, with the teams heading into the break on level terms.

Within minutes of the restart the hosts almost took the lead, but Moussa Sissoko's strike came crashing off the bar.

The Magpies continued to threaten and Wijnaldum saw another strike on goal claimed by Sommer.

Despite the pressure from the home side, it was Monchengladbach who took the lead in the 65th minute when Hazard latched on to a loose ball on the edge of the box, before drilling a low shot into the bottom corner.

Aleksandar Mitrovic looked to grab an equaliser for the Magpies on his debut, but his late strike came back off the post as his side slumped to a defeat.
