Dirk Kuyt launches Robin van Persie defence

Netherlands midfielder Dirk Kuyt defends Robin van Persie against claims of sub-par performances in the elimination stages of the World Cup.

Dirk Kuyt has defended Netherlands captain Robin van Persie, whose performances in the knockout stage of the World Cup have come under scrutiny lately.

The Dutch media have singled out Van Persie for failing to produce his best form throughout the elimination rounds, with all three of his goals coming in the group stage.

"I think we were a genuine team and I can say that on behalf of several players," Kuyt told reporters. "This group had the best team spirit I've worked in in five tournaments and Van Persie was the leader.

"Robin was injured for two months and fought so hard to come back. The way he returned to the tournament was fantastic and he led the team."

Louis van Gaal's side face Brazil in a third-place playoff on Saturday night.
