Winkelman: 'Dons won't change name'

Pete Winkelman says that the MK Dons won't be changing their name ahead of their clash with AFC Wimbledon.

MK Dons chairman Pete Winkelman has insisted that the club won't change its name ahead of their clash with AFC Wimbledon.

Winkelman created the club in 2004, having opted to move Wimbledon 50 miles to Milton Keynes after the outfit had fallen into administration. The decision did not prove popular with a number of fans, who decided to form AFC.

Ahead of the sides' meeting in the FA Cup next month, AFC Wimbledon chief executive Erik Samuelson called upon Milton Keynes to lose the word Dons from their name. However, Winkelman is adamant that a name change won't be happening anytime soon.

"I've got a lot of respect for what AFC Wimbledon have achieved," Winkelman told talkSPORT. "They are a fan owned club and gave great stimulus to others. They've not only been able to create a club but also to sustain a club and get five promotions in 10 years.

"The longer I'm in football the more I can respect that, but I don't think it's right that Eric says that.

"I'm a custodian of the club and the only way our name could ever change is if our supporters demanded it, and at the moment they are doing the opposite. I'm sure Eric will understand and applaud the reason why."

The two sides clash in the FA Cup second round on December 1.
