Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick and West Ham United striker Andy Carroll have been named as two of seven players on the stand-by list for England's World Cup campaign later this summer.
The duo had been tipped to be part of Roy Hodgson's 23-man selection, but they will now only appear in Brazil if there is an injury.
Youngsters Jon Flanagan and John Stones, of Liverpool and Everton respectively, also feature on the list, as does Man United's Tom Cleverley.
The remainder is made up by Norwich City goalkeeper John Ruddy and Toronto centre-forward Jermain Defoe.
