Louis van Gaal: 'Romero arrival shows we're prepared if David de Gea leaves'

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal says that the club are "prepared" for David de Gea's possible exit now that they have signed new goalkeeper Sergio Romero.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has suggested that the arrival of new goalkeeper Sergio Romero is in part due to the uncertainty surrounding David de Gea's future.

The former Premier League champions announced today that Argentina international Romero has put pen to paper on a three-year contract.

De Gea has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid, and Van Gaal claimed at the weekend that there is still a possibility that the club could lose their number one keeper.

"I know [Romero] very well and I think in our situation, if De Gea is going or not going, it is always a threat and we have to take care, make sure that we are prepared and that is why I think it is very good that Sergio Romero is now a Manchester United player," Van Gaal told MUTV.

Romero is United's fifth signing of the summer so far following the arrivals of Memphis Depay, Matteo Darmian, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin.
