Arsenal are reportedly readying a £30m bid for Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels in January.
The Gunners are light on centre-back options after failing to replace Thomas Vermaelen in August and manager Arsene Wenger is keen on the World Cup winner.
Hummels himself is said to be interested in leaving the German club this winter as Jurgen Klopp's side presently sit bottom of the Bundesliga table.
Manchester United have also been touted as potential suitors but, according to The Mirror, the 25-year-old would favour a switch to the Emirates Stadium.
Left-back Nacho Monreal has been forced to plug holes in the middle of Arsenal's defence in recent weeks in the absence of Laurent Koscielny, who is poised to miss another month through tendinitis.
Germany international Hummels is contracted to Dortmund until 2017.
