Chelsea are reportedly preparing an improved £40m bid for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.

Chelsea are reportedly preparing to increase their offer for Wayne Rooney to £40m.

The Blues confirmed during the week that they made a bid for the wantaway Manchester United striker, thought to be under £25m.

That was quickly rejected, and now, according to The Telegraph, Chelsea will make an offer which, including add-ons, could reach £40m.

Chelsea believe that Rooney is keen to join them and work with returning manager Jose Mourinho, while United maintain that he is not for sale.

The 27-year-old is believed to be Chelsea's number one target and former England international Rodney Marsh said this week that Mourinho would get the best out of Rooney.

United, meanwhile, have reportedly increased their offer for Barcelona star Cesc Fabregas.
