Manchester City are reportedly in talks with Belgian outfit Anderlecht to sign 21-year-old Spanish left-back Sergio Gomez this summer.

Manchester City are reportedly in talks with Belgian outfit Anderlecht to sign left-back Sergio Gomez this summer.

The Premier League champions remain in the transfer market for a new left-back following the departure of Oleksandr Zinchenko to Arsenal.

Brighton & Hove Albion's Marc Cucurella has been City's primary target throughout the summer, but negotiations with the Seagulls appear to have ended, as the Citizens unwilling to meet the Spaniard's £50m asking price.

Chelsea are now believed to be in advanced talks to sign Cucurella, with one report claiming that personal terms with the player have already been agreed.

City are understood to have drawn up a list of alternatives to Cucurella, although journalist David Ornstein of The Athletic reports that a move for Anderlecht's Gomez is irrespective of any other targets for the senior left-back position.

Ornstein adds that City are currently in negotiations to sign the 21-year-old Spaniard, who they have "scouted extensively" and view as a "high-potential development talent".

Gomez, who has been linked with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United in the past, began his career in Barcelona's academy before joining Borussia Dortmund in 2018, where he made only two senior appearances.

The Spain Under-21 international gained regular first-team football in his homeland with Huesca during a two-year loan spell between 2019 and 2021, making 68 appearances across all tournaments.

Last summer, Gomez was then signed by Anderlecht, who at the time were managed by Man City legend Vincent Kompany.

Gomez excelled as an attack-minded left-back for the Belgian giants in the 2021-22 campaign, scoring seven goals and registering 15 assists in 49 appearances across all competitions.

Interestingly, Gomez is represented by Sport Entertainment Group (SEG) who Pep Guardiola's brother Pere Guardiola has been working for since December last year.

Last month, Gomez spoke highly of Man City's versatile full-back Joao Cancelo, who elevated his game to new heights at the Etihad Stadium last season.

Speaking to reporters, via Mauveside, Gomez said: "Joao Cancelo is someone I look up to, I see similar characteristics of myself in him".

Gomez, who is under contract at Anderlecht until June 2025, is currently sidelined with a groin injury and is set to miss the start of the 2022-23 campaign.
