Real Madrid 'fail to activate Javier Hernandez contract clause'

Javier Hernandez's Real Madrid future looks to be in doubt, after the club reportedly declined the chance to activate a first-option buyout clause in his contract.

Real Madrid have reportedly failed to activate a first-option buyout clause in Javier Hernandez's contract, leaving the striker's future hanging in the balance.

The Mexico international, who is on loan at the club from Manchester United, could have joined Los Blancos outright had the club made a formal offer prior to the midnight deadline on Thursday.

It is claimed by the Daily Mail that Madrid will now have to take their chances up against other possible suitors to land the 26-year-old in the summer, with West Ham United, Southampton, Newcastle United and Lazio all said to be interested.

Hernandez took time to settle at the Bernabeu, although five goals in his last six games - including a late winner in the Champions League quarter-finals - have seen him win over the hearts of supporters.
