Team News: Wayne Rooney, Marouane Fellaini start for United

Wayne Rooney and Marouane Fellaini are in the Manchester United starting XI for the visit of Aston Villa.

Wayne Rooney and Marouane Fellaini are back in the Manchester United starting XI for this afternoon's visit of Aston Villa.

Captain Rooney makes his first league start for United after spending two months out with injury, but will play on the right wing as Marcus Rashford retains his place up front.

Jesse Lingard and Michael Carrick are the men to miss out as Fellaini also returns to the XI after a couple months out with a hamstring injury.

Meanwhile, Anthony Martial is forced to start the game from the bench, with Memphis Depay coming in for a rare start.

Louis van Gaal makes only one other change to the side that were defeated 3-0 at Tottenham Hotspur last time out, dropping promising young defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah to the bench in favour of Antonio Valencia.

For the visiting Villans, who will be relegated should they fail to win at Old Trafford today, caretaker Eric Black makes just one alteration to the XI that were defeated by Bournemouth last weekend.

Youngster Jordan Lyden drops to the bench after earning his debut last time out, with Alan Hutton coming into the back four as Leandro Bacuna moves up into a more advanced role.

Manchester United: De Gea; Valencia, Smalling, Blind, Rojo; Schneiderlin, Fellaini; Mata, Rooney, Memphis; Rashford

Aston Villa: Guzan; Hutton, Clark, Lescott, Cissokho; Bacuna, Westwood, Gana, Richardson; Sinclair; Ayew
