Sir Alex Ferguson: 'Louis van Gaal hampered by injuries'

Louis van Gaal's struggles at Manchester United this season are partly down to player injuries, according to ex-manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has defended current boss Louis van Gaal.

Under the Dutchman's guidance this term, United exited the Champions League at the group stages and are currently sixth in the Premier League, 16 points adrift of leaders Leicester City.

It has resulted in reports that Van Gaal will be relieved of his duties at the end of the season, but Ferguson has pointed to the number of injuries that the 64-year-old has had to contend with as a mitigating factor.

"It is dead easy to be critical. You have to be realistic about some things," he told Sky Sports News

"The number of injuries he has had - Phil Jones has played only seven games this season, Ashley Young, [Antonio] Valencia, [Luke] Shaw, these are big losses."

The Red Devils are due to play host to Everton at Old Trafford on Sunday.
