Louis van Gaal keen on midweek friendlies

Louis van Gaal says that he wants Manchester United to play midweek games against "high-level opponents" due to their lack of European football this season.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has said that he is keen on seeing his side play midweek friendlies.

Earlier this week United's managing director Richard Arnold revealed that the club were thinking about arranging fixtures overseas.

They will play just three more midweek games this season due to their failure to qualify for the Champions League and their early exit from the League Cup.

"I spoke with Ed [Woodward] and Richard [Arnold] last week. I like to play midweek games against high-level opponents," BBC Sport quotes him as saying.

"I have said in the first three months we must wait because it's difficult enough for the players to adapt to the new playing style and organisation.

"They shall honour that. I like to play midweek games against high level opponents."

Reports have suggested that a lack of European football could cost the club over £40m in lost revenue.
