Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho reveals that Michael Carrick will start Sunday's Premier League match against Watford at Old Trafford.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has revealed that Michael Carrick will start Sunday's Premier League match against Watford at Old Trafford.

Carrick will retire from professional football this summer to join Mourinho's backroom staff.

The 36-year-old has only played 24 minutes of Premier League football during the 2017-18 campaign, but will line up for the club's final league game of the season this weekend.

Mourinho was also keen to pay tribute to the Englishman's character during Wednesday's pre-match press conference ahead of the West Ham United clash.

"He will start the last match. Old Trafford, last match of the Premier League. Our captain in front of our fans, he will start the match against Watford," Mourinho told reporters.

"The most important quality is to be a man, M-A-N, capitals, a proper man and football is not full of them and not just football, society is not full of them, so when you find one of them you have to value and you have to keep and in this case it is not about me, it is about the club."

Carrick, who spent four months on the sidelines earlier this season after undergoing a heart procedure, has made 463 appearances for United since a 2006 move from Tottenham Hotspur.
