Dermot Gallagher: 'Manchester United's Anthony Martial deserved to win penalty'

Former Premier League official Dermot Gallagher says that the referee was entitled to award Manchester United a penalty in their game with Everton on Sunday.

Former Premier League official Dermot Gallagher has claimed that Manchester United deserved to win a penalty against Everton for a foul on Anthony Martial.

The Frenchman went down under a challenge from Idrissa Gueye and earned a spot kick for his team, although replays indicated that the Everton midfielder had made contact with the ball.

However, despite acknowledging that the incident was open to interpretation, Gallagher feels that the referee was within his rights to give United a penalty.

Gallagher told Sky Sports News: "If you polled 100 people, 50 would say penalty and 50 would go no. I think it is a penalty. I think he plays the ball - he gets a little nick on the ball - but that is all he does.

"I think Martial would get on the ball, but he brings his leg out and takes him down. I think the referee is entitled to give a penalty. If you touch the ball, it does not necessarily mean that you won't be punished."

United went on to claim a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford.
