Wayne Rooney: Top five England goals

As he closes in on a goalscoring record, Sports Mole picks out Wayne Rooney's top five goals for England.

The next few days could potentially see Wayne Rooney make history.

With 48 international goals to his name, if the Manchester United striker finds the net on two or more occasions in England's upcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers against San Marino and Switzerland, he will become his nation's leading scorer of all time, surpassing Sir Bobby Charlton.

As the 29-year-old approaches that landmark, Sports Mole picks out five of Rooney's best goals for the Three Lions.

1. Iceland (2004)

England warmed up for Euro 2004 in style, with Rooney helping himself to a brace against the Scandinavians in a pre-tournament friendly at the City of Manchester Stadium. It was his second goal - scored in the 38th minute - that truly caught the eye. Having received a pass from Paul Scholes 30 yards from goal, the youngster unleashed a rising shot that flew into the roof of the Iceland net.

2. Croatia (2004)

In a must-win game for England, Rooney rose to the fore. He scored two goals, with his first flying into the net from distance following a neat passing move. He then went on to secure a 4-2 win for Sven-Goran Eriksson's men with a breakaway goal, thus booking his country's place in the quarter-finals of the competition.

3. Russia (2007)

On what was a disappointing evening for England, one that left them having to face up to the prospect of missing out on a place at Euro 2008, Rooney produced a moment of brilliance. He controlled Michael Owen's flick-on with his chest and before the ball could bounce, he lashed a volley into the roof of the net. That handed England the lead, but they ended up losing the game 2-1.

4. Belarus (2008)

While the finish was a routine one, the movement shown by Rooney to create the opportunity bamboozled the Belarus backline. He dummied a pass for Steven Gerrard, who then slotted the ball through to the advancing centre-forward. Rooney then side-stepped his marker, before lifting his shot over Yury Zhevnov from close range to score his second goal of the contest.

5. Brazil (2013)

Joe Hart took the plaudits for a memorable display between the posts as England played out a 2-2 with the Brazilians in the Maracana, but Rooney was not far behind the goalkeeper as a result of his 79th-minute goal. His shot from 25 yards out may have taken a slight deflection off Fernando, but it's highly unlikely that Julio Cesar would have been able to stop it anyway - such was the power that Rooney managed to generate.
