Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola backs defender Aymeric Laporte to learn following the Frenchman's clash with Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy on Saturday.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has backed defender Aymeric Laporte to learn following the Frenchman's clash with Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy on Saturday.

Laporte was booked for a confrontation with Foxes forward Vardy in the latter stages of City's 5-1 win, long after Vardy had equalised in the first half.

Guardiola has said that he "didn't like" the situation, adding that Laporte will have learnt a valuable lesson.

"It was a situation I don't like, hopefully it won't happen again. [Laporte] knows that here the strikers come to fight," the Spaniard told the Daily Mail.

"He has to realise that the central defenders need a process. Now he knows better. Of course he will be here for a long time and he will learn."

City are back in action this week with a last-16 Champions League first-leg tie against Basel.
