Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany feels that it is vital that his side finish at the top of their group in the Champions League to improve their chances to advance into the latter stages of the competition.
The Citizens have failed to progress beyond the round of 16 in their past three seasons in the tournament, having failed to top their group.
Kompany is adamant that he and his teammates have to do better this time around despite facing Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, CSKA Moscow and Roma in Group E.
He told Sky Sports News: "We know how much damage it can cause your hopes if you don't win the group. We always face difficult teams if we are not seeded but we were very close last year."
City face Bayern in their Champions League opener tomorrow at the Allianz Arena.
