Tuesday's Liverpool transfer talk news roundup: Georginio Wijnaldum, Jadon Sancho, Memphis Depay

Sports Mole rounds up the latest transfer talk for Liverpool on Tuesday, January 5.

The January transfer window is now open, with Liverpool continuing to be linked with a host of big names.

Jurgen Klopp has been forced to contend with a crippling injury crisis during the first half of the season, leading to speculation that the Premier League champions could move for a new defender this month.

Here, Sports Mole rounds up the latest news on possible comings and goings from Anfield.

Barcelona outline three top January targets?

Barcelona have reportedly identified Georginio Wijnaldum, Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia as their three top targets for the January transfer window.

The cash-strapped Catalans - who sit fifth in the La Liga table - are expected to strengthen their squad this month after an underwhelming start to their 2020-21 campaign.

Wijnaldum, Depay and Garcia are all set to become free agents in the summer, but Sky Sports News claim that Barcelona are determined to land the trio this month.

However, the report adds that moves for all three players are unlikely to come to fruition until the summer, although the trio are now able to negotiate and sign pre-contractual agreements with other clubs after entering the final six months of their deals.

Pep Guardiola has admitted that Garcia is likely to leave after rejecting Manchester City's offer of a new contract, while Depay is not expected to depart this month with Lyon leading the way in Ligue 1.

Meanwhile, a recent report claimed that Wijnaldum is keen to stay on at Liverpool, but the Netherlands international is holding out for a contract offer which he feels reflects his value to the club.

Fringe players at Barcelona such as Samuel Umtiti, Junior Firpo and Riqui Puig could supposedly be moved on in order to raise the necessary funds for January transfer business.

Borussia Dortmund chief admits Man Utd talk affected Jadon Sancho form

Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has admitted that speculation surrounding Jadon Sancho's future likely caused the attacker to lose his "fluency".

Manchester United were expected to wrap up a deal for the England international in the summer, but the Red Devils ultimately failed to agree a fee with Dortmund and he remained at the Westfalenstadion.

Sancho has struggled to live up to last season's high standards after a summer of speculation, though, and Watzke thinks that the protracted transfer saga has indeed had an effect on his performances.

Speaking to German outlet Kicker, Watzke said: "Jadon had probably already subconsciously prepared himself a little bit for a change. I think he had at least thought about it so much that he lost his fluency.

"But I've felt he's been trying very hard for weeks. Things will pick up again very quickly. He is still one of the greatest talents there is."

Liverpool and Chelsea have reportedly joined Man United in the race to sign Sancho, who scored his first Bundesliga goal of the season at the 12th attempt in Dortmund's 2-0 win over Wolfsburg on Sunday.
