Both sides struggled to carve out clear goalscoring opportunities in the opening half-hour or so, but Leeds finally broke the deadlock in the 37th minute.
Leon Cort and Luciano Becchio contested for the ball in the air and it eventually dropped to David Norris who swivelled and fired home.
Charlton had a good chance to level the sides immediately afterwards as Cedric Evina's cross eventually found Johnnie Jackson, but the midfielder's tame effort was off target.
The Addicks came even closer at the end of the half as Rob Hulse met Salim Kerkar's corner, but his header cannoned back off the crossbar as Leeds held out until the break.
