Leeds United slump to Rochdale defeat

A goal in either half sees League Two side Rochdale knock Leeds United out of the FA Cup.

Leeds United of the Championship have fallen at the round three stage of the FA Cup courtesy of a 2-0 defeat away at League Two side Rochdale this afternoon.

Leeds dominated large parts of the first half, but the likes of Matt Smith, Scott Wootton and Luke Murphy all failed to find the back of the net from inside the penalty area.

Their failure to do so was punished in first-half stoppage time by Scott Hogan, who managed to glance a header beyond the reach of visiting goalkeeper Paddy Kenny.

The away side started the second half brightly, but Smith saw his header cleared off the line in the 52nd minute, before Ross McCormack curled a shot just wide of the upright.

Just as they had done during the first 45 minutes, Rochdale appeared to grow in confidence as the half wore on and Peter Vincenti had a chance to seal the outcome 13 minutes from time, but his low strike from 10 yards out slid wide of the post.

However, he was spared by Ian Henderson in the 84th when the Rochdale striker lifted the ball over Kenny and into the net to seal his side's spot in round four of the competition.
